Refurbishing Steam Radiators

Rhode Island Steam Radiator Refurbishing

Steam radiators can be big and ugly. And if your system hasn't been tuned up for years or even decades, the radiators may be noisy, sometimes unbearably so. But none of this is the consequence of having steam heat in your home or business. You can fix these things and make your steam radiators a feature of the building rather than something to complain about.

At Veteran Steam Heat, We Refinish Radiators

At Veteran Steam Heat of Rhode Island, licensed Master Plumber Doug Goss has more than 30 years' experience and knows steam heat. He knows that when properly installed and maintained, a steam heat system can be comfortable, efficient, and long-lasting. Moreover, the radiators can be attractive. Call him to find out how Veteran Steam Heat can refurbish your radiators and turn them into the centerpiece of your older house. With the company's ironclad guarantee, what do you have to lose?

Why Radiators Become Ugly

Since most steam heat systems were installed before World War II, it's not surprising that they have been painted many times. Often, the paint used was not supposed to be used on metal like cast iron or on hot objects like radiators. Painters seldom sanded the radiators before painting them to remove the old paint. There may be a mix of oil-based and latex paint, depending on when the painting was done. The result was the mess typical of old steam radiators, especially in old apartment buildings.

When radiators have many layers of the wrong paint, they become lumpy. Ill-defined, and often multi-colored, because the different colors flake off. The paint may flake off, which is not only unsightly but dangerous, as the layers certainly include lead paint. The layers of paint hide the beautiful ornamentation on the radiators. The valves may be stuck because of the layers of paint. The vents may be painted over and not working. This makes the poor radiators not only ugly, but also non-functional.

How Veteran Steam Heat Fixes Radiators

Radiator refurbishing should occur either during warm weather, or in a space where the radiator is not needed—in a temporarily unused room. That is because we disconnect the radiator from the heating system rather than just adding one more paint layer--anyone can do that.

Then we:

  • Sandblast to remove all the old paint
  • Refinish using industrial epoxy or high-temperature varnish
  • Replace any missing or broken parts
  • Reinstall the radiator and reattach it to the system

Our goal is to make the radiator look as good and work as well as it did when first installed, whether the original installation was in 1880 or in 1940. We can usually do this for less than the cost of a radiator enclosure.

Call Us When a Radiator Does Not Work or Makes Loud Noises

Refurbishing radiators is not only about making them look good. It often requires making them function better. One of the chief complaints about steam radiators is the clanking, clanging noises they often make. Such noises are not inevitable with a steam heat system. Rather, the radiators (and the rest of the system) need to be balanced, vented, and maintained. Veteran Steam Heat does all this, too.
